The Dash by Linda Ellis

I read of a man
who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates
on her tombstone
from the beginning… to the end.

He noted that first
came the date of her birth
and he spoke the
following date with tears,
but he said what mattered
most of all was
the dash between those years.

For that dash represents
all the time that she spent
alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not
how much we own;
the cars, the house, the cash,
what matters is how
we live and love
and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard.
Are there things
you'd like to change?
For you never know
how much time is left,
that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other
with respect,
and more often wear a smile
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read
with your life's actions to rehash
would you be proud
of the things they say
about how you spent your dash?

My Bio

I live in the lower peninsula of Michigan, and yes the winters are cold "up" here! lol. I'm the mom of 4  wonderful children, ranging in ages from 21 to 27.  They are great "kids", I've been very blessed. They are a huge and very important part of my life. Another very important part of my life is a wonderful poet named Joel, who I met on EZboard. Joel moved to Michigan the beginning of 2005 and we've been living happily ever after ever since.

A lot of my writings will happen because of some emotional up or down…happy, sad…good or bad.
Sometimes written to someone,
often about someone.
I find writing to be a wonderful release,
and great therapy.
Admittedly, I am addicted.. lol.
I've never considered myself to
be a good writer,
but I do write with heart.

I work with children and young adults with a neurological disorder called Autism.
They've taught me so much.
It's such a privilege to be welcomed
into each of their lives.

~To laugh often and much.. to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition, to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. _Ralph Waldo Emerson

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.

As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexations to the spirit.

If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass.

Take kindly to the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.

Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world.

Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.
