The Dash by Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak
at the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
from the beginning… to the end.

He noted that first
came the date of her birth
and he spoke the
following date with tears,
but he said what mattered most of all
was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
that she spent alive on earth.
And now only those who loved her
know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not how much we own;
the cars, the house, the cash,
what matters is how we live and love
and how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard.
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left,
that can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
to consider what's true and real
and always try to understand
the way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger,
and show appreciation more
and love the people in our lives
like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect,
and more often wear a smile
remembering that this special dash
might only last a little while.

So, when your eulogy is being read
with your life's actions to rehash
would you be proud of the things they say
about how you spent your dash?

My Bio

I live in the lower peninsula of Michigan, and yes the winters are cold "up" here! lol. I'm the mom of 4 super wonderful children, ranging in ages from 18 to 24. I've pretty much raised them on my own, and I've been so very blessed to have such good kids. They are a huge and very important part of my life. Another very important part of my life is a wonderful poet named Joel, who I met on EZboard. Joel moved to Michigan the beginning of 2005 and we've been living happily ever after ever since.

A lot of my writings will happen because of some emotional up or down…happy, sad…good or bad.
Sometimes written to someone,
often about someone.
I find writing to be a wonderful release,
and great therapy.
Admittedly, I am addicted.. lol.
I've never considered myself to be a good writer,
but I do write with heart.

I work with children and young adults with a neurological disorder called Autism.
They've taught me so much.
It's such a privilege to be welcomed
into each of their lives.

~To laugh often and much.. to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition, to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. _Ralph Waldo Emerson
